Welcome to Asian Pacific Studies

The Asian Pacific Studies Department offers an interdisciplinary major and minor in the study of both Asian and Pacific Islander societies and cultures, emphasizing a transnational perspective. Students are provided with high-quality education that enhances their understanding of Asian and Pacific Islander communities in the United States, the separate but contiguous Asian and Pacific regions, and the transnational connections between these two domains. Through an interdisciplinary curriculum that emphasizes social justice, critical thinking, research, writing, and presentation skills, the Asian Pacific Studies Department is committed to providing an education that prepares our students to excel in the contemporary multicultural and global world including:

  • Students willidentifyand compare geographies of the Asian and Pacific regions and/or聽the demographic聽diversity of Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) communities in the United States.聽
  • Students will explain cultural traditions, histories, and sociopolitical issues of the Asian andPacific regionsand/or AAPI communities in the United States.聽
  • Students willutilizecore concepts and theories of Asian Studies, Pacific Studies, and Asian American Studies to analyze historical events, cultural transformations, and intellectual traditions of Asian and Pacific nations and AAPI communities in the United States.聽聽
  • Students will evaluate how the histories and structures of oppression, specifically as they relate to ethnicity, race, class, and gender/sexuality,impactthe experiences and intersectional identities聽of Asians, Asian Americans, and Pacific Islanders.聽
  • Students will engage in practical learning byparticipatingin civic engagement, activism opportunities, internships, and community-based events within AAPI communities to foster聽diversity, social聽justice, and equity beyond the classroom.聽
