10th Annual Bilingual Teacher Conference Brings Educators Together Through Community, Connection and Mathematics

听

The College of Education at 糖心logo入口 celebrated its 10th Annual Bilingual Teacher Conference, bringing together approximately 300 educators, future educators, alumni, faculty, and community members for a day centered on learning, connection, and the continued work of supporting bilingual students and communities.

This year鈥檚 conference placed a special emphasis on mathematics education, creating opportunities for attendees to explore strategies, perspectives, and approaches to strengthening mathematics teaching and learning in bilingual and multilingual settings.

More Like a Family Reunion

But beyond the workshops and professional learning, the conference felt like something even more personal: a family reunion.

Throughout the day, attendees reconnected with former colleagues, mentors, professors, classmates, and students. Current teachers crossed paths with educators who once served as their host teachers. Former students returned as professionals and workshop presenters. Faculty members connected with family members who attended the conference, including one faculty member who discovered that, unbeknownst to her, two of her aunts were in attendance.

These moments capture what makes the Bilingual Teacher Conference unique. It is not simply a professional development event, but a gathering of a community that continues to grow, learn, and support one another across generations.

鈥淩eaching our 10th annual conference is a special milestone. What makes it truly meaningful is seeing how our community continues to grow together. Our educators, alumni, students, faculty, families, and community partners are all part of this story. The conference gives us a chance to reconnect, celebrate one another, and continue building a community that is committed to bilingual education.鈥

Students Become Presenters

The conference also highlighted the impact of CSUDH鈥檚 Bilingual Authorization (BILA) and Dual Language Learning (DLL) programs. Several workshop presenters were current and former students of these programs, demonstrating how educators are taking what they have learned in the College of Education at CSUDH and bringing that knowledge directly into classrooms and communities.

For Nallely Arteaga, Program Director, MA & Certificate, Dual Language Learning, seeing current and former students return as educators and presenters was a meaningful reflection of the program鈥檚 lasting impact.

鈥淥ne of the most rewarding parts of the conference was seeing our current and former DLL students return not only as attendees, but as educators, presenters, and leaders in the field. It shows the lasting connections we build at CSUDH and how our students take what they learn here and carry it forward into their schools, classrooms, and communities.鈥

The conference also provided an opportunity to celebrate the role of bilingual educators and the importance of preparing teachers who can serve multilingual learners and their families.

Luz Yadira Herrera, Spanish BILA Coordinator, emphasized the importance of creating spaces where educators can continue learning from one another while strengthening their commitment to bilingual education.

鈥淏ilingual education is about more than language; it is about honoring students, families, cultures, and the communities we serve. The Bilingual Conference creates a space where educators can come together, share what they are learning, and support one another in that work. That sense of community is what continues to make this conference so meaningful.鈥
