College of Education 路 Program
Funded by the state of California through the , the Mathematics and Science Teachers Initiative (MSTI) is a partnership between the Colleges of Education and Natural and Behavioral Sciences at 糖心logo入口 to support collaborative efforts that improve math, science, and computer science teacher recruitment, pre-service preparation, in-service teacher professional development, and overall STEM teacher retention.
As outlined by the Chancellor鈥檚 Office, California is in need of mathematics, science, and computer science teachers. The demand for credentialed teachers in these fields is significantly greater than the supply of fully qualified candidates. As a consequence, large numbers of students in California are taught mathematics and science by teachers who are not credentialed in those fields.
Access to qualified STEM teachers is associated with improved achievement; ensuring that all students have fully credentialed teachers is critical to closing the achievement gap in these critical subjects. The California State University (CSU), the state鈥檚 largest producer of STEM teachers, responded to this challenge with a commitment to increase its annual production of credentialed teachers in these fields. The CSU continues its aim to increase the number of qualified teachers in STEM fields.
