Services

Update: 11/4/2025

The Division of Information Technology at CSUDH is committed to protecting the university鈥檚 digital assets, data, and systems. Through a combination of technology solutions, user awareness, and campus-wide collaboration, our Security Services help ensure a safe, secure, and compliant digital environment for students, faculty, and staff.

Whether you're working on campus or remotely, our services are designed to support secure access, prevent unauthorized activity, and promote best practices in information security. We provide tools like Duo Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA), guidance on phishing awareness, secure file sharing options, and protocols for handling sensitive or confidential data.

We also offer support for reporting incidents, securing lost or stolen devices, and understanding data protection requirements, especially when working with Level 1 data or accessing university systems from personal devices.

Explore the sections below to learn how you can stay protected, meet CSU compliance standards, and safeguard university resources in your day-to-day work.

Authentication and Access

CSUDH uses to protect access to systems that require a university username and password. This two-step process helps ensure only authorized users can access sensitive data by verifying both something you know (your password) and something you have (like a mobile device). MFA is required for most campus services to reduce the risk of unauthorized access and identity theft.

Reporting and Incident Response

Timely reporting of lost equipment, suspicious activity, or data breaches is critical to campus security. If you notice erratic system behavior, unauthorized access, or if university-owned equipment is lost or stolen, report it immediately to your supervisor and the Information Security Office at iso@csudh.edu. Lost campus property should also be reported to University Police at (310) 243-3696. Your action protects not only your data but the entire campus community.

Please include the following information:

  • Date of loss
  • Description of the asset
  • Type of data involved
  • Any known or suspected security risks

Reminder: The data stored on and access provided by your device is often more valuable than the device itself. Always use strong passwords to help reduce the risk of a security breach.

Phishing & Awareness

Phishing and malware remain major threats to cybersecurity. Spear phishing attacks often appear to come from trusted sources and are designed to steal sensitive information. Unlike general phishing emails, spear phishing messages are highly personalized, often appearing to come from someone you know or trust. By staying aware and reporting suspicious emails to ISO@csudh.edu, you help protect university systems and your personal data.

Remote Work and Device Security

Accessing university systems from home or on personal devices comes with added risks. Whether you're using a CSUDH-managed or personal computer, it's important to follow secure practices: install antivirus software, keep systems updated, use VPN when on public Wi-Fi, and avoid saving passwords on shared devices. If you're unsure what鈥檚 required, see Security Measures for Remote Access below or contact the Information Security Office.

IT Security Guidance for Remote Work

University employees often can access CSUDH information systems from remote locations using personal or non-CSUDH-managed devices. While this flexibility supports productivity, remote access introduces additional risks to university systems and data. Because cybercriminals can also target systems accessible to employees from outside the CSUDH network, extra precautions are required to protect the confidentiality, integrity, and availability of university data.

Security Measures for Remote Access

If you are using a non-CSUDH device to access university systems:

  • Install and use anti-virus/anti-malware software and configure it to update automatically.
  • Set your operating system and applications (e.g., Windows or macOS) to install updates automatically.
  • Avoid using the "Remember my password" feature on shared or public devices.
  • Download free antivirus software

    • macOS:

Dropbox & File Sharing

CSUDH Dropbox is the university鈥檚 approved cloud storage solution for secure file sharing and collaboration. It is authorized for storing Level 1 confidential data (such as Social Security numbers and HIPAA-regulated information) and integrates with Microsoft Office for seamless workflows. Users are responsible for securing university data. Visit the Access Request page to request a Team Folder, add or remove access to a Team folder, or request a secure data transfer.
