Course Description

This course covers the use of ergonomic principles to recognize, evaluate, and control workplace conditions that cause or contribute to musculoskeletal and nerve disorders. Course topics include musculoskeletal disorders and risk factors such as, temperature, repetition, lifting and patient transferring.

Course emphasis is placed on industrial case studies covering analysis and design of work stations and equipment workshops in manual lifting, and coverage of current OSHA compliance policies and guidelines. Upon course completion students will have the ability to recognize work-related musculoskeletal and nerve disorders, assess employer鈥檚 ergonomic programs, and conduct ergonomic evaluations.

Individuals responsible for overseeing safety in industries such as: Construction, Manufacturing, Agriculture, Maritime and General Industry.

Learning Outcomes

Identify work-related musculoskeletal and nerve disorders
Describe risk factors associated with work-related musculoskeletal and nerve disorders
Discuss ergonomic control measures applied to work related musculoskeletal and nerve disorders
Analyze manual lifting tasks and estimate reasonable limits
Describe the components of a successful ergonomics program
Discuss OSHA鈥檚 current enforcement policies.

听Registration Eligibility

Students who wish to participate in OSHA鈥搉umbered courses in the online synchronous video conferencing format听must have a valid physical address in OSHA's San Francisco Region (AK, AZ, CA, OR, NV, HI, ID, WA, Guam, and American Samoa), or obtain permission from their local OTIEC to attend a class outside their home region.

Other CSUDH OTIEC courses can be taken by anyone (no residency required).

It is important that students review the system and equipment requirements listed below to be able to successfully take part in a CSUDH OTIEC course, whether participating in person or online via video conferencing.

Requirements for In-Person Students

A laptop with built-in camera, Wi-Fi capability

Requirements for Online Students

An internet connection 鈥� broadband wired or wireless (4G/LTE or better)
Access to computer or laptop with built-in camera 鈥� one student per device
OSHA 510, 511, 500 and 501 Students only:
Additional stand-alone webcam or secondary device (phone)
Built-in or external speakers/headset and microphone
