The Department of Political Science administers two examinations that serve different academic and professional purposes. Review the descriptions below to determine which examination is appropriate for your needs.

Credential Candidates

U.S. Constitution Exam

This examination provides an alternative way for California teaching credential candidates to satisfy the U.S. Constitution credential requirement when they have not completed an appropriate undergraduate or post-baccalaureate course.

  • Designed primarily for California teaching credential candidates
  • Examinees do not need to be enrolled at CSUDH or another CSU
  • Covers the U.S. Constitution, political institutions, civil rights, and civil liberties
  • Consists of 50 multiple-choice questions

Current CSUDH Students

POL 101 Challenge Exam

This comprehensive examination allows eligible, currently enrolled CSUDH students to demonstrate knowledge of U.S. political institutions and California state and local government.

  • Option A: Satisfy the American Institutions requirement without earning academic units
  • Option B: Earn three units of credit for POL 101 through Credit by Examination
  • Requires proof of current enrollment at CSUDH
  • Includes a multiple-choice section and a written essay
