Prenatal Stress; Early Life Stress; Child and Adolescent Mental Health; Developmental Psychopathology; Resilience and Prevention; Digital Health/mHealth; Mental Health Equity
I am a licensed clinical psychologist and director of the . My research examines stress, resilience, and the intergenerational processes shaping mental health in parents and children, with a particular focus on the pregnancy and postpartum period as a window of opportunity to support maternal wellbeing and children鈥檚 emotional development. Two questions guide my work:
Our current studies are funded by a National Science Foundation (NSF) CAREER Award, the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH), and the American Psychological Foundation (APF). Working with racially and ethnically diverse samples of pregnant individuals, we are investigating how everyday stressors and sources of connection shape stress physiology during pregnancy, and how these processes relate to children鈥檚 early emotional reactivity and regulation. Our studies follow families from pregnancy through early childhood, combining clinical and qualitative interviews with laboratory measures of stress physiology and inflammation. To understand how these processes unfold in daily life, we integrate mobile health methods such as wearable biosensors and smartphone-based ecological momentary assessment. The goal of this research is to inform preventive interventions that can be delivered during pregnancy and early childhood to promote mental health equity among families experiencing chronic life stressors.
INTERESTED IN JOINING THE PERCH LAB?
I am deeply invested in mentoring students in research and advocating for equitable training pathways into careers in psychological science and practice. Students in the PERCH Lab work directly with pregnant and postpartum families, assist with recruitment and data collection, code qualitative interviews and parent-child interaction tasks, and analyze psychosocial and physiological data. Research assistants receive hands-on training in clinical research methods and have the opportunity to present their research at conferences, develop independent projects, and receive mentored support as they apply for graduate school. No prior research experience is required.
