General Program Information

Do you have to be a manager to take this program?

No. The program is designed for anyone who wants to build the most challenging and essential aspect of supervision and management: effectively leading people.

Instead of focusing on technical skills tied to specific industries, the program emphasizes practical leadership, communication, and team support that apply in any department or work setting. This people-focused approach makes it valuable for both current and aspiring supervisors and managers.

Participants also gain a clear understanding of the laws and regulations that shape the responsibilities of supervisors and managers, along with the hard and soft skills needed to navigate those responsibilities successfully.

How can I move into management if I don’t have prior experience?

Many participants with little or no management experience have earned promotions during or shortly after completing the program.The program helps you build the foundational knowledge, skills, and confidence needed for management roles.You’lllearn core managerial functions—problem-solving, leading teams, project coordination, and communication—while also strengthening soft skills such as empathy and emotional intelligence.

How can this program help someone already working as a manager?

This program enhances essential management skills—including leadership, communication, conflict resolution, and influence—helping current managers boost team performance, navigate challenges with confidence, and collaborate more effectively across departments.

Will this program benefit me if I already hold a degree in a related field?

Yes. Participants with advanced degrees—such as Organizational Leadership—often find the program valuable because it focuses on how to apply management skills in real-world situations, not just the theoretical foundations.

Does the program address trauma-informed or people-centered management approaches?

Yes. The curriculum covers empathy, mental health considerations, communication styles, and people-centered leadership strategies. The course also addresses compliance topics related to workplace well-being.

Does the program cover managing remote or international staff?

While not a stand-alone topic, instructors regularly address managing virtual teams, time-zone challenges, and cross-border communication—especially when participants request guidance during class.

Does the program help participants learn to analyze metrics and performance data?

Yes. The program emphasizes understanding “the numbers,” including how to measure performance, interpret data, and apply metrics to individual, department, and organizational contexts. This is part of developing strong business acumen—an essential competency for managers.

Are the management skills taught in the program applicable to various industries?

Absolutely. The skills you’ll learn in the program apply across many different work environments, including public and private industry, nonprofit organizations, government, defense, hospitality, and small business settings. The certificate program emphasizes core management practices that are valuable in any organization, making it easy to transfer what you learn into a wide range of roles and workplaces.

Should I be worried about AI replacing Management roles?

AI may automate some clerical or repetitive tasks, but human judgment, interpersonal skills, and decision-making remain essential in management. The program emphasizes the skills AI cannot replace—communication, leadership, empathy, situational evaluation, and problem-solving.

Taking Courses

Do I need to apply to CSUDH to take the Managing for Success Certificate Program?

No. You do not need to apply for admission to the university. You can register for courses directly through our online shopping cart system on the course website.

What is the weekly time commitment? Is there homework?

Each class session is three hours. This certificate is designed with working professionals in mind, so assignments outside of class are minimal. Most activities, including collaborative discussions, case studies, and skills practice take place during class sessions. Optional outside work may include applying concepts to your workplace or doing brief research for your own benefit.

Do I need to buy any textbooks, or are course materials included?

You don’t need to purchase any textbooks. All course materials and supplemental resources are provided by the instructors through our Canvas Learning Management System (LMS) and are included in the program fee.

What if Ihave tomiss a classsession?

Attendance and participation arerequiredto earn credit. Accommodations are reviewed on a case-by-case basis. A one-time exception may be granted to complete a makeup assignment.Additionalabsences may require repeating the course.

Is the program offered in Spanish?

The program is delivered in English only. However, instructors discuss topics such as language barriers, multilingual workplace communication, cultural differences, and cross-cultural management scenarios.

How do I register and pay for the program?

Registration and payment are completed through our online shopping cart system, which you can access directly from the online schedule display.

Payment is due at the time of registration. You may register and pay for each course individually as you progress through the series or choose to register and pay for the full four-course certificate at once.

Is financial aid available for this program?

Federal student financial aid (FAFSA) is not available for this program. As a professional development offering that does not require admission to the university, it does not meet federal financial aid eligibility criteria.

However, unemployed and underemployed individuals may be able to receive funding through the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA). For more information, visit our or emailwioa@csudh.edu.

Individuals may also explore private student loan options. To learn more, search online for “private student loan providers” and review specific lender requirements and terms.

Additionally, if your organization offers professional development or tuition assistance benefits, you may be able to request support for this program.

Post-Completion

I completed the certificate program. How do I obtain my certificate and digital badges?

Once you have completed all the courses in the certificate program, you will need to apply to receive the certificate. Please allow 4-6 weeks after you’ve put in your request for processing. If you have any additional questions/issues, please contacteecertificate@csudh.edu.

You will also be able to see and share your earned digital badges once the final grades from all required course(s) have been submitted and you have applied for your certificate. There are several ways to view, check the status of, and/or share your digital credentials! Once you have successfully completed all required courses, you can claim your certificate badges by signing into to create an account using your CSUDH Toromail address. Can the Managing for Success Certificate Program be used as college credit toward a degree?

Unfortunately, no. These courses are not for academic credit. However, they provide Continuing Education Units (CEUs) and award digital credentials you can share on LinkedIn and résumés.

What professional organizations do you recommend for managers?

Your choice should align with your field or industry. Instructors encourage students to stay connected to both industry-wide organizations and role-specific groups.

Does the program offer job placement services or networking opportunities?

The program does not offer formal job placement services. However, participants benefit from regular interaction with instructors who are active professionals in the field and engage with peers who bring diverse workplace perspectives. This creates a built-in networking community where participants often share insights, industry practices, and professional contacts, supporting real-world connections that extend beyond the course.
