Curriculum

For both Bachelor of Science (B.S.) and Post-Baccalaureate (PB) Certificate students, the required courses or approved equivalents must be completed or transferred before beginning clinical training. B.S. students must also complete all applicable general education and degree requirements before beginning clinical training. Phlebotomy experience (CLS 302) is preferred by some affiliated laboratories. Medical Technology students should consult with their Academic Advisor regarding course requirements and planning

Bachelor of Science (B.S.) in Clinical Science:

For students pursuing a bachelor's degree in Clinical Science.

The Medical Technology option within the B.S. in Clinical Science prepares students for careers in clinical laboratory medicine. Coursework emphasizes areas such as hematology, coagulation, chemistry, immunology, microbiology, parasitology,听and transfusion medicine and provides the academic foundation for advanced clinical training.

The Cytotechnology option within the B.S. in Clinical Science prepares students for careers involving the microscopic evaluation of cells for cancer and other diseases. Coursework emphasizes cell morphology, pathology, histology, genetics, laboratory methods, and diagnostic techniques and provides the academic foundation for advanced training in cytotechnology.

Post-Baccalaureate Certificate Program in Clinical Science:

For students who already hold an applicable bachelor's degree and are pursuing the academic and clinical requirements for professional certification and licensure.

All pre-clinical requirements must be completed prior to starting the clinical internship. The PB Certificate in Clinical Science - Medical Technology is awarded upon successful completion of Clinical Year Laboratories and Lectures as a California Licensed Clinical Laboratory Technologist Trainee in an affiliated clinical facility. Awardees are eligible to sit for the national certification examinations and for the California issued license as a generalist Clinical Laboratory Scientist. Program completion is not contingent upon passing an external exam.

All pre-clinical requirements must be completed prior to starting the clinical internship program. The PB Certificate in Clinical Science - Cytotechnology is awarded upon satisfactory completion of Clinical Year Laboratories and Lectures as a Cytotechnology Trainee in an affiliated clinical facility. Awardees are eligible to sit for the ASCP- BOR National Registry Examination and the California issued state license.
