Stage 1: Apply to CSUDH and the Clinical Science Program:

Bachelor of Science (B.S.) in Clinical Science

For students seeking an undergraduate degree in Clinical Science.

Post-Baccalaureate (PB) Certificate in Clinical Science

For applicants who already hold a bachelor's degree in a related natural or clinical science field.

Eligibility to Apply

Applicants with a bachelor's degree in a field related to Clinical Science, such as Biology, Microbiology, or Chemistry, may apply to the Post-Baccalaureate Certificate Program if they meet the following academic criteria:

• • • • A GPA greater than 3.0 in the last 60 units; and
      • A B average (3.0) in core Biology and Chemistry coursework.

      3. Submit official transcripts from every college or university attended directly to the appropriate CSUDH Admissions office.
      4. If admitted, your academic records will be evaluated and a personalized academic roadmap will be created identifying your remaining pre-clinical requirements.

Admission terms and application deadlines vary by program. The Clinical Science Post-Baccalaureate Certificate Program admits students for the Fall semester only. Applicants should review the current Cal State Apply and CSUDH admission deadlines before submitting an application.

Stage 2: Apply for the Clinical Internship听

After being admitted to CSUDH and the Clinical Science academic program, students must complete the applicable pre-clinical requirements before becoming eligible to submit a separate Clinical Internship Application. There is no direct admission into the clinical internship. Students must meet all applicable Clinical Science program and clinical internship eligibility requirements before applying. Clinical internship placement is competitive and is not guaranteed.

Clinical Internship Policies

Evaluation Period.

All students in clinical internship training are subject to a three-month evaluation period at the start of clinical training. This period may be extended at the discretion of the Program Director.

Academic and Professional Standards.

Failure to meet minimum grade requirements or comply with program policies may result in disciplinary action. A grade of 鈥淐鈥� or better is required in all clinical courses.

Notice and Remediation.

Students identified as at risk will receive written notice specifying the reasons, measurable objectives for improvement, and a deadline for meeting those objectives.

Dismissal.

Failure to meet the stated objectives or continued noncompliance with program policies may result in dismissal from the training program. Dismissal may occur at any time during the clinical year.

Administrative Withdrawal.

Nonpayment of University tuition and fees will result in administrative withdrawal from both the University and the clinical program.

Supplemental Admission Criteria

The following supplemental admission criteria apply to applicants seeking placement in the Medical Technology or Cytotechnology clinical internship.

Clinical internship positions are limited by the number of training positions available at affiliated clinical facilities. Therefore, meeting the minimum eligibility requirements does not guarantee clinical internship placement or an interview with a program clinical affiliate. When the number of qualified applicants exceeds the number of available positions, the Committee for Clinical Laboratory Experience (CCLE) conducts a competitive review of eligible applicants.

Applicants are evaluated using the following criteria:

• • Academic Performance
    • A minimum 3.0 GPA on a 4.0 scale in required pre-clinical coursework.
    • The overall pattern of academic performance, including consistency, demonstrated improvement, and successful completion of required prerequisite coursework.听Applicants who have repeated two or more designated pre-clinical courses, or who have repeated the same designated pre-clinical course more than once, will receive a lower ranking in the selection process.
    • Completion of BS degree by end of Spring semester immediately preceding the start of clinical training.听 听
    • A grade of C or better in all required clinical prerequisite courses.

• • Readiness for Clinical Training and the Profession

The CCLE evaluates the applicant's preparation and potential for success in clinical training and professional practice. Factors considered may include professionalism, motivation, understanding of the profession, career goals, interpersonal communication, adaptability, reliability, and demonstrated commitment to the field.

• • Letters of Recommendation and Relevant Experience

Applicants must submit three letters of recommendation addressing their academic preparation, professional attributes, and readiness for clinical training. When possible, at least one letter should address relevant laboratory, healthcare, employment, research, or other professional experience. Relevant volunteer experience may be considered when an applicant does not have applicable work experience. At least one letter of recommendation must be from faculty member who has taught the applicant at CSUDH or from another university. Recommendations should reflect the applicant's recent academic or professional activities.

• • CSUDH Coursework Requirements

Applicants must complete a minimum of two semesters in residence at CSUDH while fulfilling prerequisite coursework before the start of clinical training. Evaluation of missing coursework at the time of application will be performed on a case-by-case basis by the Program Director.

• • Written and Oral Communication

Applicants must demonstrate effective written and oral communication skills through the clinical internship application process, which may include application materials, written responses or essays, and interviews. Relevant academic, professional, leadership, service, research, or extracurricular activities may also be considered.

• • Eligibility for Clinical Placement

Applicants must satisfy the requirements of affiliated clinical training facilities and the California Department of Public Health, Laboratory Field Services (CDPH, LFS). Clinical affiliates may require a background check, health clearance, immunization documentation, drug screening, or other onboarding requirements before clinical placement. Certain findings may affect an applicant's eligibility for placement at individual clinical training sites. CDPH, LFS will conduct a criminal background check before issuing a CLS Trainee License; a felony conviction will disqualify an applicant.

• • Additional Considerations

When evaluating otherwise qualified applicants, the CCLE may consider additional relevant factors permitted under University and Program policies, including prior clinical internship application and veteran status. Consideration of these factors does not guarantee selection.

• • Limit on Clinical Internship Applications

Applicants are limited to three unsuccessful clinical internship application attempts. After a third unsuccessful application, the applicant is no longer eligible to apply for placement in the CSUDH Clinical Science clinical internship program.

The Committee for Clinical Laboratory Experience (CCLE) is composed of university faculty and education coordinators from each clinical facility. Oral interviews will be required on campus. The CCLE, in consultation with the Program Director, determines which affiliate the student will be placed. Student preference is considered as one factor in the decision but not the deciding one.

The Program Director will notify the applicant of the admission decision in consultation with the CCLE. To retain admission status, students must communicate their intention to the Program Director, in writing, within 2-5 working days following notification of admission. Final placement assumes continued eligibility under supplementary and basic admission criteria.听
