Retired Annuitants should not be used as a permanent solution to ongoing staffing or operational needs. Their appointments must have a defined duration and may not be indefinite, regardless of the nature of the position or the terms of the applicable employment agreement.
Retired Annuitant appointments that do not have an established end date may create compliance concerns and could result in a violation of applicable CalPERS or other governing requirements.
For additional guidance, please refer to the Employment of a Retiree section of the applicable State Reference Guide or Public Agency & Schools Reference Guide.
