Overview
The Clinical Psychology option is designed to meet the professional needs of college graduates who plan careers in community mental health or who are already employed as paraprofessionals and desire to further their education and opportunities for advancement. The student is offered a unique opportunity to obtain solid academic knowledge of clinical psychology, coupled with extensive research and supervised experience in the application of such knowledge.
Students who are interested in pursuing licensure as a Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor (LPCC) may opt to take additional approved coursework beyond that required for the MA. Specific coursework and requirements will be provided by the Psychology Department and must be completed prior to graduating from the program.

Program Options
We are not currently offering an online program option as part of our curriculum.
M.A., Psychology, Clinical Psychology Option听
In the Psychology M.A. (clinical) the student听is required to听complete 33 units of credit, plus听550 hours听of supervised practicum in a clinical setting and/or supervised research and teaching in an academic setting. In addition, the student must successfully complete a written comprehensive examination or a thesis.听 听

+听Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor (LPCC)听
Students seeking the LPCC are required to complete 63 units of specified coursework in our program and a minimum of 280 hours of face-to-face clinical work supervised by a licensed therapist. These 280 hours are included in the 550-practicum hour requirement not in addition to it.听
Practicum Education
In the Psychology M.A. (clinical) the student听is required to听complete听550 hours听of supervised practicum in a clinical setting and/or supervised research and teaching in an academic setting. In addition, the student must successfully complete a written comprehensive examination or a thesis.听听

Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor (LPCC)听
Licensed Professional Clinical Counselors (LPCCs) provide care for individuals, couples, families, and groups with a variety of concerns, such as relationship concerns, life challenges, and the diagnosis and treatment of mental health and substance abuse use disorders. Through therapy, counselors work with clients to develop meaningful changes; identifying goals and potential solutions to concerns in their lives. These may include improved interpersonal communication, relationships, coping skills, self-esteem, grief and loss, effecting positive changes, and promoting mental health. The primary purpose of counseling is to empower the client to deal adequately with these life situations, reduce stress, experience personal growth, and make well informed, rational decisions. According to the American Counseling Association, 鈥淧rofessional counseling is a professional relationship that empowers diverse individuals, families, and groups to accomplish mental health, wellness, education, and career goals鈥� (American Counseling Association, 2022). LPCCs work in a variety of settings, including community behavioral health clinics, substance use treatment centers, hospitals, K-12 schools and higher educational institutions, employee assistance programs, federal agencies such as the VA, in private practice and non-profit based organizations (American Counseling Association, 2022). LPCCs must have either a master鈥檚 or doctorate degree (that includes 700 hours of supervised practice as a student) in counseling or psychotherapy, and must complete extensive post-degree supervised experience. The scope of practice for LPCCs is defined in California law in Business and Professions Code section 4999.20.听
